WHAT’S A GDI ENGINE?

GDI or Gasoline Direct Injection is a fuel injection used by many modern vehicles. Traditional multi-point fuel injection injects fuel into the intake at low pressure. With GDI engines, a common fuel line injects gasoline at high pressure directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder. This gives GDI engines precise control of injection timing and the amount of fuel delivered.

GDI engines provide many benefits that conventional fuel injection can’t. You can draw more power from smaller engines with gasoline direct injection technology. In addition, your car gets improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. While significant, the power of the GDI engine is a double-edged sword. While you get many benefits from gasoline direct injection, carbon deposits that build up can steal all the positive associated with this type of engine.

Modern gasoline is packed full of detergents and does a great washing the back sides of your exhaust and intake valves. Because GDI engines directly inject gas into the cylinder, small amounts of dirt from intake air and blowback carbon build up on intake walls. Over time this causes carbon build-up that restricts airflow to the cylinders, and you lose the aid of torque and fuel economy that GDI provides in the first place. For this reason, it’s important to use fuel system cleaners and products specializing in GDI intake valve cleaning. GDI engines have many perks, but only if maintained properly.
