Annual Vehicle Inspections in Central, VA

Understanding Virginia State Inspections
Virginia State Inspections are required by law to help ensure vehicles operating on public roads meet minimum safety standards. Most passenger vehicles registered in Virginia must pass a safety inspection every 12 months at an authorized Virginia State Inspection Station.
During the inspection, certified safety inspectors examine critical vehicle components that affect safe operation. Once a vehicle passes, an official Virginia inspection sticker is issued and displayed on the windshield. If a vehicle does not pass, repairs must be completed before it can successfully pass a reinspection.
Routine inspections help identify worn or damaged components before they become serious safety hazards
What is Included
Virginia State Inspections evaluate a vehicle’s major safety systems in accordance with requirements established by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Inspection items typically include:
- Braking System: The service brakes and parking brake are inspected for proper operation, wear, and overall safety.
- Steering & Suspension: Steering components, suspension parts, and related systems are inspected for excessive wear or damage that could affect vehicle control.
- Tires, Wheels & Rims: Inspectors verify adequate tread depth, tire condition, wheel integrity, and proper installation.
- Lights & Electrical Components: Required lighting systems are checked, including: headlights, brake lights, tail lights, turn signals, hazard lights, and license plate lights.
- Windshield, Wipers, & Mirrors: The windshield is inspected for conditions that may obstruct visibility, while windshield wipers and mirrors are evaluated for proper operation.
- Exhaust System: The exhaust system is inspected for leaks, proper mounting, and other safety concerns.
- Fuel System: Inspectors check for visible fuel leaks and verify that fuel system components are safely secured.
- Horn & Safety Equipment: Required safety equipment—including the horn, seat belts, and other mandated components—is inspected to ensure proper operation.
- Additional Safety Components: Depending on the vehicle, additional items may include: hood latch, doors, bumpers, vehicle frame (when applicable), and other safety-related components required by Virginia regulations.
How Often is an Inspection Required?
Most passenger vehicles registered in Virginia must receive a safety inspection every 12 months. The expiration month is displayed on the inspection sticker located on the windshield.
Vehicle owners are responsible for ensuring their inspection remains current. Driving with an expired inspection sticker may result in citations or penalties under Virginia law.

What Happens if the Vehicle Fails
If a vehicle does not pass inspection, the inspector will provide a list of the components that failed to meet Virginia safety standards.
After the necessary repairs are completed, the vehicle must be reinspected according to Virginia State Inspection procedures. Many repair facilities can complete both the repairs and the required reinspection.
Not every failed component represents a major repair. Some failures involve relatively minor items, such as worn windshield wipers, burned-out light bulbs, or tires with insufficient tread depth.
