About the Virginia State Inspection
Safe driving is a priority to the state of Virginia. Since 1933, the Virginia Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Program has been helping drivers stay safe on the road. Every year, Virginia requires motorists to have their vehicles undergo a safety inspection examining a long list of items from seat belts to the exhaust and lights. Most vehicles must be inspected annually: passenger vehicles, SUVs, pick-up trucks, trailers, motorhomes, and motorcycles. If your vehicle is over 25 years old and registered as an antique under the Department of Motor Vehicles, it does not require annual testing. If you are new to Virginia or have bought a new vehicle, it must pass the Virginia state inspection to register it. We are equipped and qualified at Ferber’s Tire & Auto Service in Ashland, Virginia, to perform the Virginia state inspection for all vehicle types. Don’t hesitate to contact our auto repair shop for more information.
What Gets Checked During the VA State Inspection?
The Virginia state inspection thoroughly examines several internal, external, and mechanical parts of your vehicle for condition and function. The horn, window glass, driver’s seat airbags, airbag readiness lights, seat belts, and parking brakes are inspected in the cabin. On the exterior of your vehicle, the lights (headlights, turn signal lights, fog lights), side-view mirrors, tires, wheels, rims, hood latch, and windshield wipers are checked. Various mechanical components are assessed, including the engine belts, fluids, steering system, suspension, fuel and exhaust system, and brakes. Furthermore, each item comes with its own inspection checklist; for example, the brakes are checked for worn, damaged, or missing parts and mirrors are examined for rigidity of mounting, reflecting surface, and road visibility. Remember that this is not an exhaustive list of what gets assessed during the Virginia state inspection. For the entire list of items, contact us by phone or stop by.
