SIGNS OF A BAD WATER PUMP

The engine of your car creates an insane amount of heat. The water pump runs coolant through the engine block, radiator, and hoses to draw heat away from the engine to keep it cool. Running coolant through the engine is vital to keep your engine running smoothly at the optimal temperature. While sturdy, like most parts, over time, the water pump will wear out and need replacement. So what are signs to look for in a bad water pump?

The most visible method would be to check the front of your car for a coolant leak. The water pumps made from various seals and gaskets will dry out and crack over time. These cracks and tears will allow coolant to leak from your vehicle. If you notice orange, green, or red fluid under the front center of your vehicle, it may be a sign of a possible leak. It's important to note that a small leak will create rust or a buildup of gunk and minerals leaking to corrosion. This could be another sign that it's time for a replacement.

Several things may cause your vehicle to overheat, and lack of coolant is one of the main culprits. When the water pump isn't able to keep the engine cool by circulating coolant, your engine will continue to rise in temperature. An overheating engine can become a severe issue, so if you notice steam coming from under the hood, or your car running hot, be sure to take action!

After the visual comes the audio. If you hear a whining noise that increases with acceleration, this could be another sign that you have a failing water pump. While noise from the front of your vehicle has the potential to be several things, if you notice this along with some other sign, it could let you know its time.

An overheating engine is nothing to laugh at. If any of these symptoms pop up for you, it's best to take your vehicle to professionals to take a deeper look. Here in Ashland, Virginia, at Ferber's Tire and Auto, we can handle any of your automotive needs!
