The Future of Electric Vehicle Repair
Whatever Your EV Needs
If you drive an electric vehicle, you know finding a qualified mechanic to service your car can be difficult. You’ve likely heard of the term “regenerative braking,” but you may have questions about exactly what the term means in the simplest of terms. The ASE technicians at Ferber’s Tire & Auto Service are there to help you with whatever you need when it comes to your brakes, car maintenance, or any repairs..
Regenerative Braking: How It Works
Regenerative braking converts kinetic energy built up by the brake system and turns it into electrical energy to charge the car’s high-voltage battery. The brake system still slows the car during the regenerative braking process. There are pros and cons to the regenerative braking system. You will find that the brake pads and rotors may last longer in a regenerative braking system. This results from the regenerative braking system doing so much of the work to slow the vehicle and using the brake pads and rotors less frequently. With a regenerative braking system, your electric vehicle will likely have a wider range. You’ll have to recharge the battery less often throughout the year. If you have a hybrid vehicle, you will likely get better gas mileage out of your car. A car with a regenerative braking system may be less effective at low speeds and highway driving. Any situation where you don’t brake as often makes the regenerative braking system less effective due to the lack of charging. Regenerative braking systems can make your brake pedal feel different than you might be used to. You might feel a temporary unresponsiveness or lack of compression in the pedal. Many newer electric vehicles have created brake pedals that feel like traditional ones so you don’t face the previous problems. Finally, you may notice decreased stopping power with a regenerative braking system. The systems perform just fine in situations where you have a braking situation where you come to a stop gradually. If you try to come to a quick stop, you may need to put more pressure on the brake pedal of a regenerative braking system than with a traditional system. Newer electric vehicles with newer regenerative braking systems often don’t need additional pressure to give you the same stopping power.
