Tips & Tricks Archives - Ferber's Tire & Auto Service

Winter driving means having to handle cold weather and tricky conditions.  At Ferber’s Automotive & Body, we want all of our customers to travel safely as possible.   Here in Virginia, we don’t get heavy annual snowfall, so here’s a few tips for those who need a refresher. Start braking early and gradually, avoiding sudden or hard braking.

  • Press the gas pedal gently to regain traction and prevent skidding. Don’t rush when starting or stopping, especially at traffic lights.
  • Keep extra space between your car and the one ahead. Remember, larger vehicles need more distance to stop.
  • Avoid cruise control and sharp steering. Merge into traffic slowly, as sudden movements can make your car slide.
  • Only drive if it’s absolutely necessary. Even if you’re confident in bad weather, staying off the roads is safer unless essential.
  • Stay focused, pay attention to your surroundings, and slow down when conditions are poor.
  • If your car starts to skid, focus on where you want to go rather than where the vehicle is sliding.
  • Speed limits are meant for dry, clear conditions. When roads are wet, icy, or snowy, reduce your speed below the posted limit.
